The R3 is probably the cheapest Leica on the market, but it's a bit big for a SLR, and there is a history of bad electronics, the one I had was ok. The Leica R3 is an ok camera, nothing more, it doesn't feel solid like a tank like other Leicas.. PHOTO SAMPLES. VERDICT: Image Quality: 4/5: Versatility: 4/5: Build Quality: 4/5: Value for money.

Basically, the R3 is an XE-7 that takes Leica R-mount lenses, and you simply cannot do much better than that in all of SLR-dom. Metering is basic center-weighted manual or aperture preferred automatic. It is a HIGHLY reliable and rugged camera (noteably better than the R4 on that score).

The Leica R3 also has an automatic electronic shutter feature that will determine the correct shutter speed based on the light reading and so on. While shooting, I manually adjusted the shutter speed (still unsure if I could trust ALL of the features) to what the meter indicated.

Leica R3 is 35mm film SLR camera made by Leica and produced between 1976-79. It is the successor of the Leicaflex SL2, and was developed in cooperation with Minolta, together with the Minolta XE bodies. Leica borrowed the electronics and some of the chassis technology from the Minolta XD cameras to produce the Leica R3 and Leica R4 cameras. They were designed with some Minolta XD series.

The Leica R3 was a big hit for Leitz, and at one time Leitz thought that their future would be in the SLR market. It was also very expensive, more so than the already expensive Minolta XE-7. I bought my Leica R3 with the Summicron 50mm f2 lens and was excited to compare it to the Minolta XE-7 with the Rokkor 50mm 1.4 lens.
